The Legendary Story Behind the Estate
Filoli is more than just a mansion; it carries the glorious memories of California’s Gold Rush era. The estate was built in 1917 by William Bowers Bourn II, the owner of California’s most famous gold mine—the "Empire Mine."
The most celebrated aspect of the estate is the origin of its name, "Filoli." It is not an ordinary word, but an acronym derived from Mr. Bourn’s personal credo:
Fight for a just cause
Love your fellow man
Live a good life
The first two letters of each phrase combine to form "Filoli," representing the ultimate pursuit of wealth and life values by California’s high society at that time.
