According to American Diabetes Association, in 2021, 28.4 million of Americans are diagnosed with diabetes. 2 million Americans have type 1 diabetes, including about 304,000 children and adolescents

Among Asian American adults, 12.2% of Filipino, 10.8% of Asian Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese prevalences range from 6.1-7.1% and 8.9% of other Asian American groups.

Diabetes is a significant health concern within the Chinese American community, reflecting broader trends observed among Asian Americans. As of 2018, the age-adjusted percentage of adults aged 18 and over diagnosed with diabetes was 5.6% among Chinese Americans, compared to 7.5% among non-Hispanic whites.minorityhealth.hhs.gov

However, this statistic may not fully capture the prevalence of undiagnosed cases. Research indicates that undiagnosed diabetes is almost three times higher among Asian Americans compared to non-Hispanic uchicagomedicine.org

Additionally, a study published in 2023 highlighted that Chinese Americans have a higher percentage of body fat for their body mass index (BMI), which elevates the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Given these factors, it's crucial for Chinese Americans to engage in regular health screenings and adopt preventive measures to manage and reduce the risk of diabetes.
